There are several factors that have been proven to increase your risk for cancer, such as genetics, weight, and environmental factors such as prolonged exposure to UV rays and tobacco use, so you’re advised to use sunscreen, avoid smoking and maintain a healthy diet to reduce your risk.


Among the advice given to reduce your risk for developing cancer is to add antioxidant-rich foods. It has long been believed that antioxidants have cancer prevention properties but is this true?

What Do Antioxidants Do?


 Antioxidants serve the process of protecting your body from free radicals. Free radicals cause damage to your cells. They are unstable atoms that, due to not having full electron shells. This causes them to react easily with other substances. 


They seek other molecules to bond with, which leads to more free radicals being created in a process called oxidative stress. This can lead to you contracting serious illnesses, such as cancer. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals by sharing their own electrons with them.

Antioxidants have been proven to reduce your risk of contracting certain types of cancer, such as pharynx, larynx, mouth and throat, stomach, lungs, and bowel. However, these studies say that it is better to receive your antioxidants from your diet as opposed to from Antioxidant supplements, as the exact conditions that provide your body with the benefits may not be properly replicated. Antioxidants in fruits come in combination with other vitamins and minerals, while antioxidant supplements often just provide you with one type of antioxidant.


It should be noted that for persons undergoing cancer treatments antioxidants can actually be damaging.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C may offer you protection against cancers of the rectum, pancreas, and cervix, oral cavity, stomach, and esophagus, breast, and lungs. Persons who smoke cigarettes are advised to consume more vitamin C to reduce their risk of developing lung cancer.


Vitamin E

Vitamin E helps to prevent cancers of the colon and the prostate. 


Beta Carotene

Beta Carotene can help in the prevention of cancers lung, prostate, breast, and head, and neck cancer. It increases the number of white blood cells in your body which helps to protect your body. However, you should avoid consuming Beta Carotene in large doses as it may lead to you developing carotenosis, and it could increase your risk of lung cancer if you are a high-risk person.
